Finding Calm in the Storm

Fall off track when life gets busy? Us too. But the smallest moments in our day can keep us connected to our wellbeing goals during the chaotic times. We share why life is so busy for us now, and three mindfulness based tips for maintaining calm during the busy, stormy days life throws at us…

James has been working late into the night on EastEnders recently, and it’s been quite the challenge for both of us. Those night shoots are no joke — the hours are long, and the toll on body and mind is real. As he’s been pushing through those demanding schedules, I’ve been here at home holding down the fort, managing everything on my side - focusing on keeping Summer in her routine and getting my wellness pages for the magazine in on time, and making sure Farrar feels supported. Deadlines can always be a bit tricky when other priorities scream for your attention too, but I’ve really enjoyed reading through the inspiring health and well-being research this month, as well as some really great products and books coming out soon - these summer months are always so abundant! It’s so fascinating for me to learn about how small lifestyle changes can lead to big improvements in overall health — and it keeps me inspired to take care of myself and making sure James, Summer and I are both in a good place, even amidst the chaos! I’m so grateful I get to try out the new products, research and trends. This month mouth taping was on the list (you’ll have to read the May issue if you want the final verdict - I’ll get in trouble if I share it here!). On top of all that, we’ve been eyeing up another retreat venue to add to our VERY exclusive list, and throwing some dates around - but that’s for another time!

James has been making some big changes himself. He’s actually taken a break from caffeine lately because he didn’t want to rely on it during the night shoots, since it could mess with his circadian rhythm and affect his sleep patterns more than the night shoots are already. He’s always been a huge coffee lover, so cutting it out has been pretty confronting for him. But it’s been amazing to see him stick with it - his discipline has always been off the charts!

At home, I’ve been leaning into holding the fort, and one thing I’ve really been focusing on is batch cooking healthy meals and snacks for Summer. I’ve been experimenting with recipes that are quick, simple, and nutritious — like 2-ingredient oat and banana muffins. They’ve been such a hit around here, and I’ve been roping Summer in to help me - you should see how much muffin batter she can tuck away — I was honestly surprised there was enough left for any muffins at all! And although it’s a a lot to do, it’s so helpful to have those healthy snacks ready to go, especially when time is tight!

And, I’ve discovered a great little money-saving hack for buying organic veggies if anyone is interested! Every Monday, Uber Eats offer 50% off fruit and veg,(Morrisons has a fantastic range of organic options). I stock up on organic veg and fruit on Mondays separate from my regular supermarket shop, and it makes eating organic so much more affordable.

It’s not always easy to prioritise wellbeing, especially when schedules are unpredictable, but I always think compassion is the number one part of wellbeing we should make time for when life is chaotic. For example, maybe you just don’t have time to get to yoga class or crossfit or pilates today - that’s ok! Layering judgement and guilt on top of the busyness and stress, plus the disappointment that you missed it, will not enhance our wellbeing further. Secondary suffering can often feel worse than the original suffering that caused it. Have compassion for yourself on these busy days - you’re not a robot - you’re a human being who ebbs and flows and feels and sometimes needs and wants rest, and taking one thing off your plate can be the difference between feeling frazzled or not when it comes to the end of the day.

Mindful Wellbeing Tips for Busy Times…

1. Hold Onto Small Parts of Your Routine (Even If it’s Just One Thing)

When life is a whirlwind, it’s hard to keep a full routine intact. But even carving out small, consistent moments for yourself can make a big difference. For James, it’s about finding brief moments to stretch, cuddle Summer, or have a quiet cup of lemon water in the morning before the madness starts. I try to make time for a quick meditation (sometimes it’s literally three slow breaths which takes less than thirty seconds - you try meditating with a three year-old at breakfast time!) or a few minutes of journaling to clear my head - I’m using a lovely new self-care app for this called ‘Finch’. These tiny moments of calm amidst the busyness help reset your mind and body, making it easier to tackle everything ahead.

2. Set Boundaries and Learn to Say ‘No’

This one is something I’ve really had to learn, and I’ve seen James struggle with it too. It’s easy to say yes to everything — especially when you want to help or keep things running smoothly — but there comes a point when you need to recognise your limits. Whether it’s turning down extra work, saying no to commitments that aren’t essential, or simply stepping back when you need a break, setting boundaries is key. It’s not about being selfish, but about protecting your energy and well-being so that you can be the best version of yourself for work, family and friends.

3. Be Mindful of Your Energy and Adjust as Needed

Sometimes, the best way to prioritise your wellbeing is to check in with yourself. Whether it’s through breathing, meditation, or just taking a moment of stillness to label how you are feeling — can help you tune in to your current internal '‘weather’. If you’re exhausted, it’s okay to acknowledge it, and maybe that new awareness can help you to adjust accordingly. That might mean taking a nap, prioritising a quiet evening, or making time for something that brings you joy. It’s all about listening to your body and being flexible and self-compassionate enough to adapt when life gets overwhelming.
